Over the past 19 years, the Pirates on the Pungo Regatta has raised more than $125,000 for various charities and non-profits throughout Beaufort County. In the early years, the proceeds went to the Pungo District Hospital Foundation to support needs of the local hospital.
With the closing of the hospital, subsequent regattas have supported other worthwhile organizations such as the Friends of Belhaven, the Beaufort Community Care Fund, the Shepard Cancer Foundation and Martha’s Food Pantry.
The Friends of Belhaven, participating in the NC Department of Commerce Small Town Mainstreet revitalization program, used the funds to provided banners to beautify the streets of downtown Belhaven. The Beaufort Community Care Fund used their funding to enrich the lives of residents at the two local nursing homes, Autumnfield and Pantego House. In honor of Bob Haynes, a former organizer of Pirates on the Pungo, a significant contribution was made to the Shephard Cancer Foundation to support patients and families throughout Beaufort County dealing with this dreadful disease. Martha’s Food Pantry helps meet the nourishment needs of many local families. Pirates on the Pungo is proud to have been able to support these worthwhile causes.
For the first time, this year’s event is being sponsored by the Belhaven Community Chamber of Commerce with assistance from the River Rat Yacht Club, a local sailing association. Funds raised in 2019 will be donated to the Belhaven Memorial Museum , a 501 c (3), for much needed repairs and upgrades. A portion of the funds will be set aside as seed money for Pirates on the Pungo 2020 to ensure the success of this event.
